Bidding Countries
In a meeting in October 2007, the FIFA Executive Committee abolished the previous convention of rotating the tournament between continents. A decision was taken to accept bids from countries in all continents except those that had hosted either of the two most recent tournaments.
Traditionally FIFA had selected one host country at a time, but this also changed. Now the host countries for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments will be chosen simultaneously.
Ten regions (12 countries) are currently in the running. FIFA regulations prevent the same continent from hosting two consecutive tournaments. That means that if a National Association from Europe is chosen for 2018, then Europe and South America will not be able to host the FIFA World Cup™ in 2022.
